FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Earn the Black Vote and several other organizations are rallying together to demand that the Democratic party respond to requests for the creation of a Reparations Commission

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, JANUARY 25, 2024 –Earn the Black Vote, a coalition dedicated to strategically mobilize and amplify the voting power of the Black electorate, has announced that its leaders, along with the leadership of several other aligned organizations, will be hosting a rally and press conference ahead of President Biden’s meeting with the South Carolina Democratic Party in Columbia, South Carolina. As part of this press conference and rally, Earn the Black Vote and organizers will demand that the Democratic Party respond to requests for the creation of a Reparations Commission via executive order.

The Black vote represents a crucial component of the President’s campaign, a facet in which he must secure votes in order to win the election. The Black voter population in the U.S. is on trajectory to reach 34.4 million this year, which is up 7% from 2020 numbers, according to Pew Research. The same data indicates that Black voters will comprise 14% of the total number of eligible voters during the next Presidential election.

Earn the Black Vote is committed to educating and empowering Black voters while encouraging the President to establish a reparations commission via executive order before June 2024. The creation of such a committee is vital to the commitment made by the President towards reparatory justice. The proposed commission will create a master plan of reparation proposals for Black America. Once the executive order is implemented, Earn the Black Vote plans to educate Black voters on the importance of  backing the Democratic Party during the 2024 elections.

Earn the Black Vote will be joined by Reparations United, Movement for Black Lives, the Afro-Descendant Nation, N’COBRA-Chicago, the South Carolina Reparations Coalition, the Racial Justice Coalition of Asheville, Inc,  and numerous other South and North Carolina-based organizations supporting the reparations initiative.

“Our message to the President is very simple,” said Kamm Howard, Executive Director at Reparations United. “Black voters are aware that they hold the key to the Democratic Party success in 2024. They are saying they also want to win in 2024, and the only action the President can take to reverse the 2.3 million Black voters who defected from the Party and who disapprove of the President is to establish a reparations commission by Executive Order now. Before, even that, will be too late.”

“It’s time for South Carolina to address its unrepentant participation in and continuation of one of the USA’s two founding crimes against humanity. South Carolina was the port of entry for up to 40% of Africans enslaved in North America. South Carolina led the campaign and fired the first shot in the Civil War. Today, South Carolina shamelessly profits from the erasure of Black suffering. For this election, it’s time that the Democratic party earn the Black vote,” said  Efia Nwangaza, South Carolina Reparations Coalition.

Via the proposed executive order, the Democratic Party can excite voters and earn the trust of Black voters. Details of the upcoming event are as follows:

Saturday, January 27th, 10:30am  South Carolina Democratic Party
The Don & Carol Fowler Center
1929 Gadsden Street
Columbia, SC 29201
